Mike Berman_Photo_Final_02 07 17Michael Berman, Esquire is a Manager in the Tax Department with over 25 years of tax compliance and consulting experience.  Mike assists clients regarding strategic tax planning and compliance matters relating to corporations, partnerships and individuals.  Mike was formerly a Director of Global Tax for a privately held high technology company.  In addition to his international tax experience, Mike has extensive experience regarding nexus tax matters, sales and use tax, Canadian goods and services tax (“GST”) and value added tax (“VAT”).

Mike is a leading tax defense expert having successfully resolved in excess of 100 tax examinations, including preparing over 600 subject matter experts.  He has successfully resolved Federal and state income tax examinations, sales and use tax audits, a UK VAT audit and a French and Singapore income tax audit.  He is one of the Firm’s leading experts regarding all phases of tax examinations, at both the examination and appellate levels regarding a number of complex tax issues.

In addition to Mike’s global tax experience, he is a nationally recognized expert relating to the research tax credit. He has assisted small start-up companies to some of the largest global companies with claiming R&D tax credits.  He obtained one of the highest R&D credit settlements ever achieved in the utility industry representing one of the largest utility companies in the U.S.

Mike has extensive tax and consulting experience within the high technology, manufacturing, biotechnology, food, beverage and spirits, financial services, pharmaceutical, automotive, avionics, U.S. defense contracting and energy, power generation industries.

Mike was formerly an attorney for the Internal Revenue Service, Office of Chief Counsel. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar.  He earned a Juris Doctor of Law from Temple University, Master of Science in Taxation from Bentley College and a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Massachusetts – Boston.
